“Follow me!” With two simple words, Jesus comes crashing into our lives. If you dare to follow, you quickly discover Jesus always takes you to new places. He is on the move in our world. And keeping up with Him means leaving some things – even some precious things - behind. The call to follow Jesus means going BEYOND where you are now. BEYOND what’s comfortable. BEYOND the routine. BEYOND the way we practice our Christianity. BEYOND the kind of people we are today. It’s time to go BEYOND. Way BEYOND. In so doing, we will impact ourselves, our church, our community, and our world for Christ in ways that are BEYOND our imagination. |

The Christmas Pageant is one of the special traditions of Christmas. On Sunday mornings in December, we will look at each of the participants in the original Christmas pageant – those special people who surrounded the simple manger bed of our Lord. As we consider each of them, we will find many things that we need to imitate at Christmastime – and year ‘roun |

One of my favorite literary characters of all time is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The PBS Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett as the wily detective is still one of my favorite shows ever aired on television. I have read the complete library of Sherlock Holmes works straight through twice. I love the interweaving of logic and mystery. Fun stuff.

Driving down the road recently, I was, as usual, tuned in to sports radio listening to the afternoon chatter. When it came time for a commercial, the familiar voice of former Indianapolis Colt’s coach, Tony Dungy, came over the airwaves. In that short spot, Coach Dungy told the story of Jim Redmond who helped his son, Derek, cross the finish line at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, after the runner had blown out his hamstring in a race that he had trained for all his life. That spot, along with several others that I have now enjoyed, fall into the theme of what Coach Dungy calls “uncommon” - men doing extraordinary, uncommon things in the midst of this culture that so often stresses conformity and political correctness. What I have since learned is that Dungy has written a book for men by that name, Uncommon. I am enjoying that book now.
